W.L. Weller Special Reserve

One of many whiskeys currently under the Buffalo Trace banner, the W.L. Weller Special Reserve is an excellent fit for the casual bourbon drinker and the seasoned veteran alike. Originally from the Stitzel-Weller distillery, Buffalo Trace acquired the full line of Wellers in the late 1990s. In fact, the W.L. Weller Special Reserve is the exact same mashbill as the much sought-after Pappy Van Winkle whiskeys which were originally produced by Stitzel-Weller before their acquisition. As a wheated bourbon (meaning they use mostly wheat alongside of the required corn, as opposed to the more common use of rye), it has a pleasant sweetness to it that shows up on the palate more than on the nose, making it an easy sipper and a perfectly good mixing whiskey.

The alcohol definitely comes across on the nose and shows up again on the finish, but it does not over-power the lighter, sweeter tones in the body. While there is nothing particularly remarkable about it, the Special Reserve is an excellent candidate for a regular bourbon to keep on hand for any occasion. This is not a terribly complex bourbon, but its simplicity is more of an asset than a detriment: it stands up well on its own and still carries its weight in a cocktail making it a great choice for any and all whiskey needs.
